CBD, Yeah, You Know Me!
CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the many cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. Unlike THC (the psychoactive stuff that gets people high and also found in the plant), CBD is non-intoxicating. When you extract 100% pure CBD, it’s known as an isolate. CBD isolate has all of the medicinal effects of CBD but doesn’t include any of the other compounds from the Cannabis plant. When you extract everything from the whole plant (except for the THC in our case), it’s known as whole-plant medicine and considered broad-spectrum CBD oil.
Whole-plant, broad-spectrum CBD oil contains pure CBD and high amounts of compounds such as phytocannabinoids like CBD, cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and fatty acids which increase the body’s ability for absorption. All of these compounds, working together, is called the entourage effect.
The entourage effect helps to activate our body’s very own cannabinoid receptors like CB1 and CB2 to modify our skin’s cells to maintain healthy functioning and homeostasis by reducing inflammation in the skin. Yes! The body produces cannabinoids in what is known as our endocannabinoid system. One of the most significant cannabinoids we produce is called anandamide (a-NAN-da-mide).
Anandamide helps power our endocannabinoid system and changes our cells to help maintain homeostasis. When anandamide is created within the body, it binds with our CB1 and CB2 receptors to signal neurons and regulate inflammation. This process influences pain management, inflammation regulation, and could inhibit the production of excess skin cells in conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Anandamide breaks down in the body quickly, so introducing CBD helps to increase it. The root word of anandamide, “Ananda” is roughly translated from the Sanskrit word “bliss” or “joy.” So, basically, CBD helps to boost your bliss molecules!
